I picked this album up at a local record store called Schoolkids, which I love for its accessibility. By this I mean that they have endless ways to sell you cheap CDs, from blind bags to 20 cent bins, a testament to the idea that theres just too many CDs out there, and not enough people willing to pick up music from artists they have never heard of. Window Flowers was one of the albums I picked up out of the 20 cent bin, though why it was in there at all was beyond me. I picked up plenty of great stuff from that bin but one thing at a time.
On a different note, when I was in high school I’d listen to this Spotify playlist called ‘hipster cocktail party,’ it featured acts like MGMT and Bombay Bicycle Club, and it definitely influenced the kind of music that I love now. There’s just something about the 2010’s and rising indie rock/folk/ idk I’m not a music critic acts that sprouted this type of music I adore, from its mellow vibes to its often acoustic sound with ample effects and synth sounds. It feels like a bunch of people making music from their laptops and hitting it big, and I love that. Window Flowers fits perfectly into this little niche in my brain.
It’s mellow at some points and more energetic at others. It's very acoustic, but I did notice a lot of reverb throughout. The lyrics may not stick in your mind but it’s incredible background noise, like something you’d hear in a coffee shop. I know that sounds belittling, maybe even offensive, but I see these things as positives. It doesn’t beg you to sit down and listen critically with your fancy headphones and a glass of red wine. As a student myself, having good music to put on in the background and just listen to is great for me. It’s nice to have music like that. If you aren’t familiar with this band then I ask you to give them a try, you can find them wherever you get your music.
